Answers to the most common questions.

What hours are you open?

We are open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In what event will the center be closed? Do you close for inclement weather?

During inclement weather - The same procedures for school closings as the NYC DOE. It will be announced on our website and an email will be sent to the families. All students will be prepared for online/remote teaching.
Other Closures:
Federal Holidays, Winter Recess, and Spring Recess.

On average, how long have your teachers been teaching?

We take education seriously, so we employ only experienced educators.

Are the staff members CPR and first aid certified included Epi-Pen?

Yes, our staff is certified in different areas.

Do you accept ACS vouchers?

Yes, but co-payments apply.

Do you welcome parent involvement? Can I stop by unannounced?”

Our school is a community that embraces the whole family. We allow the parents to drop off their children at school. The child’s teacher and/ teacher’s assistant will be there to escort your child to the classroom. If you’d like to get an inside look at your child at play or in the classroom, you are more than welcome to make an appointment with our office at anytime. We also encourage parents to come in and talk about their careers, help with projects at home that need to be completed and returned, lending objects of units of study and anything else that will help get parents involved.

What will my child be learning in your preschool?

We follow the NYSED Early Childhood standards. Our activities are all theme-based.

What are teacher qualifications?

All teachers must meet or exceed the state requirements for childcare providers and are required to receive ongoing professional training annually. We also require background checks.

What is your Behavior policy?

We do not use physical or verbal punishment under any circumstances. We use positive guidance and re-direction to acknowledge children’s feelings and emotions and provide them with problem-solving techniques, self-calming activities, and choices/activities geared toward their interests including a cozy corner.

How often do you clean the rooms and toys?

All of our rooms have cleaning schedules for different areas of the classroom throughout the day. If a teacher sees a child cough, sneeze or put a toy in their mouth the toy goes directly into the sink in the classroom to be cleaned and sanitized. We follow the NYC DOH guidelines.

What is your policy regarding sick children?

In order to keep our children, their families and our staff as healthy as possible, we require that any child with a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or contagious disease be kept at home.

How do you communicate with parents?

Parents are welcome at all times at the preschool. The parents are also contacted by email or phone call or written note. In addition, we provide a monthly newsletter to share news, event information, and other notes with our families.

What if someone other than my spouse/partner or me has to pick up my child?

In order to protect your child, we require that you provide in writing the names of any individual who has permission to pick up your child. We require advance writing notice from you when someone other than a family member will be picking up your child and will check identification. If we have any questions or concerns, we ask that you be available via cell phone to provide confirmation.

What security measures are in place to protect my child?

Your child’s safety is important to us at Plato. Our facilities and outdoor play areas have secure entries and exits that are carefully maintained and monitored by security cameras. All employees have undergone thorough background checks prior to employment. We have a secure building and are monitored by security cameras.

Do you provide meals and snacks?

We are a nut-free facility. Yes! We utilized an outside vendor that prepares nutritious, home-cooked meals and snacks for children. Our weekly menus are provided by the school and posted in every classroom weekly. Parents provide an afternoon snack for their child.

Is there a special place for my child’s belongings?

Yes, for each classroom, each student will have their own cubbies for their belongings.

What if my child has allergies?

Due to the high number of children with peanut allergies, we do not serve peanut products. If your child has a specific allergy, please list them on our dietary restriction letter so that we can make appropriate food substitutions.

Do you take the children outdoors?

Yes, weather permitting, we take children outside daily. Children should be dressed appropriately for playing on our playground or taking group walks.
